Victory Unlimited, I’ve been listening to your show for quite awhile and I just got the Battle Plan about a month ago. You have changed my life. I see a lot of things in life differently than I used to. You’re like the Internet “Big Brother” I never had. To be honest, I never know if you’re gonna give me a pat on the back or a kick in the ass. But somehow, whatever show or post that you put up next always turns out to be just what I need at that moment in time. So thanks for all you do for us guys out here who are committed to trying to “man up” the right way.
I just turned eighteen last month and I’m a senior in high school. I’m not sure if I’m going to go to college for a specific major or what—just yet. I know that time is on my side in regards to planning my life, but I don’t want to make any stupid mistakes along the way. The reason this is on my mind so much is because I see a lot of older guys around here who don’t seem to be too happy with their lives. In my community, I see a lot of older men in bad health, with no sense of brotherhood, and working jobs they hate. But, a lot of these same older men sit around at the barbershop or at cookouts with us young cats talking about how they had it so great when they were my age. This is very confusing to me.
When I think that my life could turn out like some of theirs has—it scares me. They don’t usually go into any detail about what went wrong in their lives, but it seems pretty clear to me that it may have something to do with the concept of achieving Full Spectrum Dominance over their lives—like you talk about in your book. I don’t want to make any big mistakes in my life. I want to get it right. So here’s my question, V.U.:
What should us younger guys do today in order to be successful in our lives in the future?

Randal, thanks for your question. Now, let’s get right into it.
First understand that success in life is mostly the result of your willingness to adopt the Super Soldier Stratagem that I outline in the Battle Plan. Choosing to attack specific areas of your life in order to maximize the satisfaction that you experience in your life as a whole is a decision that you should make right now. Every man (or woman), no matter what their age, will always find that their quest for success will be better served by attempting to achieve Full Spectrum Dominance over 4 specific areas of their lives.
The 4 areas of your life wherein you must seek to achieve dominance are:
- Spiritually
- Mentally
- Physically
- Materially
Spiritually
What do you believe? And how dedicated are you willing to be to live according to what you believe? What you believe affects how successful you will be in all areas of your life.
A man must have faith to achieve anything in life, whether it be positive or negative—or constructive or destructive. This is true whether some like to acknowledge it in that particular terminology or not.
Some men only believe in God. Other men only believe in themselves. And some men only believe in other people. But there are also men who believe in all three. No matter what your belief is, know that you have to have a “belief” in something to give you the confidence needed to make forward progress in any and every area of your life.
Believing in concepts that go beyond the limitations of just our five senses is one of the things that differentiate us from animals. It’s next to impossible for any man who has no desire to hold himself accountable to either a higher principle of performance, a higher standard of ethics, or a higher spiritual power to ever really consistently excel in his life.
Your belief system powers your entire life, and it’s importance cannot be overstated.
Mentally
What are you thinking about most of the time? What are you meditating on? What are you filling your mind with—things that enrich you and build you up or things that erode your self-worth and sabotage you? Indeed, a mind is a terrible thing to waste—so make a commitment to never let yours go by the wayside.
Remember, they call what’s constantly being broadcast on Television, Radio, and Internet “programming” for a reason. Don’t sit around and let yourself be programmed—choose to program “yourself” instead.
Think of your eyes and ears as the gateways to your mind—because they are. And think of contemplation as consumption—because it is. It’s for these reasons that you should stand guard over what you watch and what you listen to. True, you should have fun, you should enjoy your life, but never get in the habit of idling your life away by wasting too much of your time on things that have no real lasting value to you.
Always strive to achieve a good balance between educating yourself and entertaining yourself. Dedicate yourself to consistently expanding your knowledge base by reading and watching everything you can find on subjects that interest you or will help you get ahead in life. It’s a well-known fact that one way to increase your chances of success in life is by being the smartest guy in the room. Strive to be the guy in the room that can “tell” you what happened—as opposed to being the guy in the room standing there “wondering” what happened.
Physically
To put it simply: Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you. And if your doctor says “yes”, then commit to following his or her advice for the rest of your life. Stay active. Treat your body a little more like a machine and less like a garbage can. Eat and exercise to feel better now and to increase your chances of feeling better in the future.
Think of doing cardio, lifting weights, and watching what you eat the same as you would think of investing. Some people think that committing to taking care of yourself physically is about vanity, but it’s really not. It’s really about increasing your quality of life now, and improving your chances of still enjoying your life the older you become.
In fact, many people will tell you that if you don’t have your health, then you don’t have anything. Though that statement may sound extreme to those who are still young or healthy, current disease statistics tend to add massive weight to the truth of it.
In terms of the average man’s quality of health, it’s been said that heredity “loads the gun” but lifestyle “pulls the trigger”. So if you’re going to target your health, aim at consistently maintaining a certain level of fitness for the rest of your life.
Materially
Although life is free, “continuing” to live is not. This is why it’s necessary to “make” a living. In this society, the only way you can afford the things you need to exist in the material world will require for you to work for them—which is why you should make your career choices wisely.
As a young man about to graduate high school, you have some big decisions ahead of you. Unless you were born into money, there’s a variety of ways you can go: You can go to university, you can go to trade school, you can open a business, or you can sit back and do absolutely nothing. For the sake of eliminating the ridiculous, let’s go ahead and rule out the idea that you’ll choose to do nothing, okay?
If you have a career or business in mind that you want to pursue, the worst thing that you can do is to allow yourself to fall in love with the “idea’ of it rather than the reality of it. Research as much as you can in order to have a truly informed career decision. Reach out to as many reputable people who already have achieved the things in their lives that you want and ask them for their advice and recommendations. Also, one of the best things you can do is actually find a way to shadow (spend a workday with) someone in your desired career field for a day or two. That way, you will get a real-time, real-life view of what that job, career, or business really entails.
Speaking of career choices, one book that I would highly recommend for you is called WORTHLESS: The Young Person’s Indispensable Guide to Choosing the Right Major by Aaron Clarey.
This book is a MUST READ book for any young man (or woman) who is in the process of making the decision on attending college. The book dares to tell you things about picking your college major that your guidance counselors, teachers, and sometimes even your parents won’t tell you. The book goes so far as to declare which degrees are “worthless” and which degrees may represent the wisest choices you can make. The book will challenge your views on what you think you know, and it will exceed in either changing your mind or strengthening your resolve.
But be warned—Aaron Clarey is a rebel economist who is on a mission to help you navigate your financial world by any means necessary. His passion and dedication for helping guys in various areas of their lives are worthy of merit. You can find out more about him and his work here: Captaincapitalism.blogspot.com
Lastly, on the subject of not wanting to make any big mistakes in life:
Let me be the first to tell you that the only life that’s lived without a mistake is one that’s not really lived in the real world. If you’re a flesh and blood, human being you are going to make some mistakes—and probably some big ones too. But don’t let that scare you. Just understand that a mistake is often only the same thing as a “misstep”.
The key thing to remember is that as long as you stay on the path that’s “right for you”, then you’ll eventually make fewer and smaller mistakes the more you advance towards the goal that you’ve set for yourself. So don’t give up—just continue to “grow up” and you’ll more than likely be fine overall.
Though achieving success and satisfaction in your life has no age limit, do understand that the younger you are when you choose to go on this mission—the better. As a young man of only eighteen, theoretically, time is very much on your side. So use it wisely.
Soldier on.
